How To: 3 Ways to Wear Emerald Makeup

Saturday, March 30, 2013

When it comes to trends, I try to stay up-to-date, especially with fashion. For example, I own a mullet skirt, a bubble skirt, a pencil skirt and a chambray top. But makeup is another story. I have this sickness called I-don't-like-experimenting-too-much-itis, and symptoms include buying the same foundation for over four years and being known as that "eyeliner girl."

This year, the supposed "in" makeup color is emerald, according to and Pantone--which are both just trying to make money off people by choosing colors that people probably don't have in their kits--let's be honest. Like last year's Tangerine Tango, emerald can be really gorgeous but is tricky to pull off if you aren't a sixteen year-old model doing an editorial spread for some high-fashion magazine.

Below are three simple ways you could try introducing a little emerald into your life:

Beginner: After doing an natural eye look, try smudging or lining your lower lash line with an emerald shadow, like this bluish-green hue from the Coastal Scents Ultra Shimmer Palette. Curl lashes, and add mascara. Then pair with nude pink lips and a natural looking blush.

Intermediate: Whip out your deepest, darkest black liquid liner (I used one by Pixi) to line your eyes and create a small wing. Then, using an emerald eyeliner (or just a damp angled eyeliner brush dipped in emerald shadow), draw a line right above of the black liner. Make sure that the lines are parallel to each other. Add mascara. Finish off the look with a bright, contrasting lip color like Revlon Lip Butter in Sweet Tart, a Barbie pink shade.

Advanced: Blend an emerald shadow all over your eyelid (again, I used a shadow from the Coastal Scents Ultra Shimmer Palette) sheering the shadow out as it gets to the brow bone. Using a black shadow, define the crease and outer corner of the eyes. Blend well. Then line the eyes with a black liquid liner, add mascara, curl lashes, and highlight the brow bone. Complete the look with a barely there lip color. I used MAC lipstick in Cherish (a nude with a tiny hint of pinkish brown) with NARS lip gloss in Chihuahua (a nude pink) layered on top.

Will any of you be taking the dive into emerald makeup this year?

  1. I might have to try the first two looks one day. I absolutely adore them!
